day 1: iconic milan – duomo, La scala, and navigli district
Our Visit to the Duomo and Rooftop Views
We began our Milan adventure at the Duomo di Milano, the city’s most iconic landmark and a true architectural wonder. Exploring the intricate details inside the cathedral and marveling at its towering columns was awe-inspiring. But the real highlight was the rooftop. We ascended to the top and were rewarded with panoramic views across Milan’s skyline, and on clear days, you can even see the Alps in the distance. Among the spires, we felt as if we were walking on air above the city.
The Opulence of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
Our next stop was the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, an ornate shopping gallery and one of the oldest in the world. Walking beneath the glass-domed ceilings and mosaic floors, we were surrounded by high-end boutiques like Prada and Louis Vuitton, a window-shopping paradise. We couldn’t resist spinning our heels on the bull mosaic on the floor—a tradition believed to bring good luck.
An Afternoon at La Scala Opera House
We then headed to La Scala, Milan’s historic opera house. Even if we couldn’t catch a performance, we still toured the theater and learned about its rich history. Peeking into the red-and-gold auditorium, we imagined the countless world-class operas and performances held here since its opening in 1778. The attached museum was a great stop, where we saw costumes, set designs, and busts of legendary composers.
Evening in the Navigli District
In the evening, we explored the Navigli District, Milan’s vibrant canal district, perfect for a leisurely dinner and drinks. Strolling along Leonardo da Vinci’s canals, we found cozy spots for aperitivo, savoring Italian bites and cocktails while enjoying the sunset. The lights reflecting on the water created a picture-perfect end to our first day in Milan.
day 2: History, Art, and milanese culture
Exploring Sforzesco Castle and Sempione Park
The next day began at Sforzesco Castle (Castello Sforzesco), an impressive 15th-century fortress that once housed Milan’s ruling family. Walking through the castle’s courtyards and exploring the museum exhibits inside gave us a sense of Milan’s deep-rooted history, from ancient artifacts to Renaissance masterpieces by Michelangelo and da Vinci. From there, we wandered into Sempione Park, where locals jogged and strolled along shady paths. We enjoyed the view of Arco della Pace, Milan’s beautiful Arch of Peace, and soaked in the tranquil atmosphere of this green oasis.
Shopping and Lunch in the Brera District
Our next stop was the Brera District, an area known for its artsy atmosphere, charming boutiques, and cobblestone streets. The area felt like a delightful escape from the city’s hustle, and we browsed small artisan shops and galleries before stopping for lunch at a cozy trattoria. Enjoying dishes like risotto alla Milanese in Brera’s unique ambiance was a highlight of our day.
The Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie
One of the most memorable parts of our trip was seeing The Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie. Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece is even more moving in person, capturing the tense moment when Jesus reveals that one of his disciples will betray him. Due to its fragility, entry is limited, and we felt lucky to stand before such a timeless piece of art.
An Evening at Piazza del Duomo
As evening settled, we returned to Piazza del Duomo for one last look at the illuminated cathedral. We savored a gelato as the Duomo’s facade lit up against the night sky, and the square filled with a calm yet lively energy. It was the perfect ending to two unforgettable days in Milan, a city that seamlessly blends historical grandeur with modern charm.
