Meteora, Greece, is like no place we’ve ever seen. Located about four hours by train or five hours by car from Athens, this landscape of towering rock pillars topped with monasteries feels like stepping into another world. Our trip was a blend of history, personal challenge, and relaxation, creating an unforgettable experience.
GETTING TO METEORA AND WHERE TO STAY
Meteora is accessible by train or car from Athens, and we recommend booking in advance, especially during peak seasons. Staying in the town of Kalambaka or the charming village of Kastraki offers convenient access to the monasteries and a range of accommodations, from budget-friendly stays to more luxurious retreats. Each village gives travelers a taste of Greek hospitality and views of the breathtaking rock formations.
VARLAAM MONASTERY
Our monastery tour began at Varlaam Monastery, perched gracefully atop one of Meteora’s most prominent rock pillars. Built in the 14th century, this monastery was founded by monk Varlaam and later restored with its iconic stone architecture. Inside, we wandered through a chapel adorned with vivid frescoes, where ancient depictions of saints and stories from the Bible filled each wall with life and devotion. A museum within the monastery housed priceless manuscripts and artifacts, offering a glimpse into the monks’ way of life. Standing on the balconies, we were treated to panoramic views of Meteora’s awe-inspiring landscape. With its blend of art, architecture, and peace, Varlaam Monastery set a high standard for the day.
THE GREAT METEORON MONASTERY
Next, we explored the Great Meteoron Monastery, Meteora’s largest and oldest monastery, built on the tallest of the pillars. It was here that we truly felt Meteora’s spiritual and historical essence. Founded in the 14th century by Saint Athanasios, this monastery has grown into a revered pilgrimage site. As we walked through its halls, we were greeted by beautifully preserved frescoes, religious relics, and an extensive library holding manuscripts that date back centuries. The entire place radiated a profound sense of reverence, with quiet areas dedicated to meditation and reflection. The architecture alone was awe-inspiring, from its towering walls to the intricate wood carvings. From the edge of the monastery, we marveled at the vast landscape below—a breathtaking view of Meteora’s towering pillars and valleys, framed by Greece’s natural beauty.
ROUSSANOU MONASTERY
Our final stop was Roussanou Monastery, a peaceful nunnery perched delicately on a narrower rock. Unlike the larger monasteries, Roussanou exudes an intimate, quiet charm that made us feel warmly welcomed. Crossing the stone bridge to enter, we found beautifully maintained gardens, and inside, delicate iconography and artwork filled the chapel, reflecting the nuns’ careful devotion. The serene surroundings of Roussanou gave us a moment of calm at the end of a full day. From the monastery’s terraces, we could take in the lush green valleys and Meteora’s incredible rock formations one last time. The day’s journey through Meteora’s monasteries had been everything we’d hoped for—a rich tapestry of history, beauty, and quiet contemplation.
A PERSONAL RETREAT
While I explored these magnificent monasteries, Danny took a different approach to unwind. He enjoyed Meteora’s charm from the town below, where he found panoramic views of the cliffs and relaxed by the hotel pool. This time apart gave us a chance to reconnect later and share our individual experiences. Meteora, as we discovered, is a destination with something for everyone—whether you’re drawn to the adventure of hiking and history or simply looking to take in the sights.
PRACTICAL TIPS FOR VISITING METEORA
Timing: The monasteries typically open mid-morning and close by early evening, and each monastery may close on different days. Checking ahead ensures you don’t miss any highlights.
Modest Dress: To enter the monasteries, dress modestly. Women should wear skirts or dresses, while men should avoid shorts.
Getting Around: Renting a car or using local tours makes it easy to navigate between monasteries, and it’s a great way to catch views from the best lookout points.
FACING FEARS IN A PRIME ROCK-CLIMBING LOCATION
The next day, it was time for something entirely different. For those who follow our channel, you know that Danny has a serious fear of heights. Determined to challenge himself, he saw Meteora as an opportunity to confront this fear head-on. Known for its rock-climbing routes and incredible views, Meteora is a world-renowned climbing destination. After deciding to give it a try, we geared up and headed to the cliffs. The experience was intense. Danny climbed over 30 meters up the rock, making it past the first pitch with incredible focus. But soon after, he was overcome with a panic attack and had to rappel down. Despite the setback, we were incredibly proud of him for even attempting it—this was no easy feat. Not many people with a fear of heights would sign up for a challenge like this!
