14 Oct Autumn in the Laurentians: The Coziest Fall Getaway in Canada
If you’re dreaming of the perfect fall getaway in Canada filled with cozy cabins, fiery foliage, and lakes that mirror the colors of autumn, you’ll find it in Québec’s Laurentians. Just a short drive north of Montréal, this mountain region completely transforms when autumn arrives, inviting travelers to slow down, breathe in the crisp air, and soak up the season.
During our visit, we enjoyed the tranquility of perfect fall moments. We sipped coffee as the morning mist drifted over the lake, wandered through tunnels of gold and red leaves, spent the evening beside a warm fire, and even took a nighttime walk through the forest, guided by the voice of a mythical giant.
From treetop adventures to thermal spas and fine dining by the water, the Laurentians capture everything we love about slow, meaningful travel.
Thank you so much to Tourism Laurentians for hosting us!

Why the Laurentians Are the Perfect Fall Destination
There’s something instantly comforting about the Laurentians. Maybe it’s the way the air smells of pine and woodsmoke, or how every café and chalet seems to have a cozy fire flickering inside. The people here are just as warm. They are quick to smile, happy to chat, and proud to share the beauty of their home with anyone who comes to experience it.
We spent four days exploring the region, and it felt like time slowed down the moment we arrived. The fall foliage here is on another level, with fiery reds and golden yellows painting the lakes and mountains in a way that feels almost surreal. One side of our trip was all about tranquil lakes and peaceful reflections; the other was mountain peaks, forest trails, and fresh alpine air. Both sides of the Laurentians offered endless ways to explore, yet somehow, it never felt like we had to do anything at all.
That’s the magic of this region. It invites you to move at your own pace. Whether you’re paddling across a calm lake, hiking through tunnels of color, or simply curling up by the fire with a warm drink, the Laurentians remind you that slowing down isn’t wasting time — it’s how you truly experience it.
Where to Stay in the Laurentians in Autumn
The Laurentians have some of the coziest accommodations we have ever stayed at. During our trip, we experienced two very different sides of the region: one defined by peaceful lakeside luxury, and the other by mountain views and modern glamping beneath the trees.
Estérel Resort – Lakeside Luxury and Warm Hospitality
Nestled right on the lake, Estérel Resort won us over right away. Each room is a full studio with a kitchenette, living area, and a fireplace at its heart, separating the bedroom from the sitting room. The bathroom had both a shower and a soaking tub complete with a tray for tea or a good book, and our view of the fall foliage reflecting on the lake was simply breathtaking.
The property itself is an experience. From the Lido Thermal area, with its hot tubs and barrel sauna overlooking the lake, to the paddle boards, hiking trails, and picnic spots, there’s no shortage of ways to unwind or explore. Estérel is also a foodie’s dream, offering multiple dining options on-site, including Le Voilier and ROK, which we’ll talk more about later. Even though we don’t drink, we were still impressed by their extensive wine cellar. And the breakfast buffet? Danny declared it the best he’s ever had, with omelets made to order and the most delicious crêpes to start the day right.
Bel Air Tremblant – Romantic Domes and Mountain Views
If Estérel was all about lakeside serenity, Bel Air Tremblant brought a sense of cozy adventure. We stayed in Deluxe Dome 3, tucked at the end of a cul-de-sac that offered extra privacy and panoramic views of the surrounding forest painted in fall colors. Inside, our dome was far more spacious than we expected, complete with a kitchenette, shower, tub, and multiple seating areas. But our favorite feature was the fireplace, which made the space feel both luxurious and intimate.
Outside, our private deck had its own hot tub and sauna, perfect for crisp autumn evenings under the stars. Breakfast was served in a dome-style restaurant on the property, and guests can also dine at Ekki Sushi, Bel Air’s other on-site restaurant. The property has a small farm and offers bikes for rent, but even if you do nothing at all, it’s the kind of place that feels like a retreat from the world — quiet, romantic, and surrounded by nature’s best show.
Best Things to Do in the Laurentians in Fall
The best way I can describe fall in the Laurentians is that this region is a “choose your own adventure” type of experience. If you want to spend a quiet morning by the lake, you can. If you’d rather hike mountains for incredible views, well, you can do that too. There are so many different ways to enjoy the fall foliage. Here are a few of our favorites.
Sentier des Cimes – Walk Among the Trees
If there’s one place that captures the essence of fall in the Laurentians, it’s Sentier des Cimes. This treetop walk offers panoramic views of the vibrant foliage all around. It is accessible to everyone via an elevator, which makes it even more special. The wooden pathway winds gently upward through the forest, leading to an impressive observation tower with a suspended net at the top.
Standing on that net and looking straight down into the center of the tower was one of our favorite moments of the trip. Danny even faced his fear of heights and walked across it — a small moment that felt big. The property also has a giant slide (glissade) that’s pure fun, no matter your age. Afterward, we stopped for lunch at Chez Émile, and then headed to Gourmet Sauvage, just next door, which deserves its own spotlight.
Gourmet Sauvage – Taste the Forest
If you love discovering places that feel truly authentic, Gourmet Sauvage is one of those rare gems that’s worth the trip all on its own. The owner, Ariane, greeted us with the kind of warmth that makes you feel like an old friend. She took us on a quick outdoor foraging walk, teaching us about local wild ingredients, before inviting us inside for a tasting that blew us away.
Everything here is made with care and a deep respect for nature. From their handcrafted mustards to rich forest caramels, each product tells a story about the land it came from. Gourmet Sauvage also hosts seasonal workshops, and it’s easy to see why people fall in love with this place. It’s more than a store — it’s a reflection of the Laurentians’ heart and soul.
Guided Hike with D-Tour at Domaine Saint-Bernard
When it comes to peaceful outdoor spaces, Domaine Saint-Bernard stood out as one of the highlights of our trip. Before our guided hike, the team at D-Tour learned that Danny has a soft spot for birds and was hoping to feed them if possible, so they paired us with the perfect guide. Alexis was incredibly knowledgeable about the local trails and wildlife, and he made sure Danny got that special moment by the lake where the birds land right in your hands.
From there, we wandered deeper into the forest, surrounded by trees showing off every shade of autumn. The quiet was so calming that even our footsteps felt softer. It was one of those experiences that slows you down without you realizing it, a gentle reminder of how healing nature can be when you just let yourself be part of it.
Tremblant Village and Panoramic Gondola
No trip to the Laurentians is complete without spending time at Tremblant, a colorful pedestrian village full of charm and energy. We took the Panoramic Gondola to the summit, where we hiked up to the observation tower for sweeping views of the mountains blanketed in fall color. For a bit of fun, there’s even a mountain luge — part thrill ride, part scenic adventure — that had us laughing the whole way down. Tremblant’s restaurants and cafés are also excellent, but the real standout experience here happens after dark.
Tonga Lumina – A Story Told by Light
As night falls, Tonga Lumina transforms Tremblant into something truly magical. From the moment you enter the lift line, you are immersed in a story, one about the giant protector of the mountain and our relationship with nature. The sounds and lights carry you up and away from the busy village, truly immersing you in the experience.
After getting off the chairlift, the trail draws you in further, glowing softly with lights, soundscapes, and projections that guide you deeper into the woods. Messages are revealed along the way about balance, respect, and the power of the natural world. It’s an experience that’s hard to put into words — beautiful, moving, and completely unforgettable. We left in awe of how thoughtfully it was done and how deeply its message resonated: that the earth is alive, and it deserves our care. Tonga Lumina quickly became one of our favorite activities of the trip, and we highly recommend experiencing it for yourself.
Where to Eat in the Laurentians
One of the best parts of visiting the Laurentians in autumn is how every meal feels like an extension of the season itself — comforting, flavorful, and often enjoyed with a view that takes your breath away. From lakeside fine dining to mountain fondue and creative twists on local cuisine, this region knows how to celebrate good food.
Le Voilier – Lakeside Dining at Its Finest
Overlooking the water at Estérel Resort, Le Voilier is all about elegant dining with a relaxed and cozy feel. We started with an elaborate charcuterie board, which honestly could have been our entire meal. But we were just getting started. Next up was the most delicious trout as our entree, which was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented! But the highlight of the night was dessert. I thought I might not have room for it, but I am happy I was wrong. We shared a maple crème brûlée that might just be one of the best desserts we’ve had in Canada. Le Voilier also serves a great lunch menu, and they offer to-go options so you can take wraps or sandwiches on a lakeside picnic.
Rok Restaurant – A Sizzle of Surf and Turf
Also located at Estérel Resort, ROK offers one of the most unique and fun dining concepts in the region. You cook your meal on a sizzling hot stone right at your table. We ordered the surf and turf platter and loved the combination of flavors and freshness. It’s interactive dining that feels special, and we ended the meal with a rich chocolate mousse that was the perfect sweet finish.
Ekki Sushi – Artful and Award-Winning
At Bel Air Tremblant, Ekki Sushi has been named the best Japanese restaurant in the area for several years in a row. Coming from Hawaii, we absolutely love asian cuisine and were really excited to try their dishes. While the gyoza was the perfect tasty starter, the main event was the sushi. We ordered the chef’s platter, which came out like a work of art! Every roll was fresh, vibrant, and bursting with flavor. We chatted with a man at the table next to us who said it was his second night dining there—that is how good it is.
La Savoie – A Taste of the Alps in Tremblant Village
La Savoie is one of the most iconic restaurants in the area, and for good reason. It is known for its raclette and fondue meals, which are shared between at least two people. After a lot of deliberating, Danny and I decided on the raclette, which was warm, melty, and wonderfully indulgent. The cheese itself is imported from France, and it reminded us of dining in a chalet in the Alps. Between the rustic décor, the friendly staff, and the delicious food, it’s the perfect way to end a crisp fall day in the mountains.

Tips for Planning Your Laurentians Fall Getaway
When to Visit
Peak fall foliage usually occurs between late September and mid-October, with early October offering the most vibrant colors.
What to Pack
Layer up! Bring cozy sweaters, a light rain jacket, hiking shoes, and a swimsuit for those thermal spas and hot tubs.
Getting There
The Laurentians are about 90 minutes north of Montréal by car — perfect for a weekend escape or as part of a more extended Québec road trip.
Embrace the Slow Moments
Take time to linger, whether that is over breakfast, by the fire, or beside the lake. The Laurentians are best experienced slowly.
Final Thoughts
What impressed us most about autumn in the Laurentians wasn’t necessarily how gorgeous it looked, though it is, of course, truly stunning. But to us, what stood out even more is how this place feels. It’s something we picked up on the moment we arrived.
There’s a rhythm to life here that reminds you that it’s okay to slow down, to breathe, and to be. Regardless of whether you walk way up above the trees on Sentier des Cimes, soak in a lakeshore sauna, or walk hand in hand under the glow of Tonga Lumina, this place invites you to reconnect with nature, your loved one, and yourself.
The Laurentians are, without question, the coziest fall getaway in Canada — a place where you can do everything or nothing at all, and both will feel just right.
